Women Encouraged to Improve Their Health Through
Extreme Heart Health Makeover Challenge

Des Moines, June 1, 2009—The American Heart Association announced today it is seeking applicants for the third Extreme Heart Health Makeover Challenge.

As part of the annual Greater Des Moines Go Red for Women Luncheon, ten women will be selected to participate in the Extreme Heart Health Makeover Challenge presented by Iowa Health – Des Moines. Applications are due June 12, 2009. Applicants will be selected by a committee based on a variety of criteria. Selected participations will be notified the week of June 22, 2009 and the Challenge kick-off will be July 6, 2009.

The participants will experience a 10-week heart health makeover where each woman will have an initial consultation and check-ups with a physician associated with Iowa Health – Des Moines, oversight by a registered dietician, along with a free 10 week membership package to 7 Flags and a session with a personal trainer. Each participant will take part in an initial wellness screening where height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, -HDL/LDL, triglycerides, body mass index and blood glucose will be measured.

“Too few people realize heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, more than all forms of cancer and the next five leading causes of death combined, “ says Christy Stroope, Challenge Committee Co-Chair. “But, the good news is heart disease can largely be prevented. Through the Extreme Heart Health Makeover Challenge, we want women to become more aware of the risks of heart disease and how they can be prevented or even reversed,” stated Erika York, Challenge Committee Co-Chair.
